Fire Academy 2026

The Durango Fire & Rescue Fire Academy provides structured, hands-on training designed to prepare qualified candidates for the physical, technical, and operational demands of the fire service. The academy delivers comprehensive instruction in firefighting skills, emergency response, safety practices, and teamwork under the direction of certified fire service instructors.
Successful completion of the Fire Academy may provide a pathway to consideration for entry into Durango Fire & Rescue’s hiring pool for Reserve Firefighter/EMT opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma
- Colorado EMS Certification or higher
- Valid driver’s license

ACADEMY DETAILS:
- Interviews will be on February 11th and 12th, 2026
- Academy will start March 22nd, 2026 and run for 14 weeks
- Successful candidates will be required to pass a background check, MVR check, drug screen, and NFPA 1580 medical physical assessment.
- Anticipated schedule – Monday – Thursday (10 hour days) 07:00 - 17:00
- Compensation is $20 per hour
